Get an exclusive first look at the new Independent Lens film, We Want the Funk, with PBS Wisconsin at The Cardinal Bar in Madison on March 27! Premiering nationally on April 8, We Want the Funk takes viewers on a syncopated voyage through the history of funk music, from early roots to 1970s urban funk and beyond!

Don’t miss this opportunity to get a sneak preview of an incredible film and make sure to stick around because following the screening, we’ll open up the floor for a funk-inspired dance party, led by DJ Phil Money!

About We Want the Funk

We Want the Funk, directed by Stanley Nelson, chronicles funk music’s vibrant history and enduring legacy. Featuring James Brown’s dynamism, the extraterrestrial funk of George Clinton’s Parliament Funkadelic, transformed girl group Labelle, and Fela Kuti’s Afrobeat, the story also traces funk’s influences on both new wave and hip-hop.

About DJ Phil Money 

DJ Phil Money is a New York City transplant who began spinning records at house parties on Long Island in the late 80s before eventually graduating to the New York City club scene. He has opened and played along with acclaimed artists like OutKast and Antibalas, and his talent has taken him to several faraway cities, including London, Dublin, and Toronto!

He currently channels his passion for music through his work in Madison. He’s held it down at Natt Spil, Merchant, Lucille, The Majestic, and currently Lola’s to name a few! He was the DJ for the first two sold-out Madison Funk Festivals at The Majestic Theatre, as well as the DJ for Madison’s first Hip-Hop Festival. In 2022, he was hired as The Director of Music Programming for Rule No. 1 Restaurant Group. Since then, DJ Phil Money has worked tirelessly to bring live music and local musicians to downtown Madison.

Cardinal Tea Dance w/ DJ Sarah Akawa!

Tea dances were events organized on Sunday afternoons in the US gay community, originating in New York in the 1950s and 1960s. The original dances included tea service and were a place for singles to meet. The name alludes to traditional tea dances of the English countryside. The events began because opportunities for gays to meet and socialize were limited due to social and legal oppression. It was illegal in the middle 1960's for bars in New York City to sell alcohol to people known to be gay, hence gays began to hold "tea dances". The Cardinal Bar continued this tradition when we opened in 1974 and we are bringing this tradition back!

Wisconsin’s premiere Latin Jazz Band for over 20 years, Tony Castañeda and his band have been honoring and keeping alive the music of what some call the Golden Age of Latin Jazz.  Winner of 14 Isthmus Madison Favorite Jazz Band annual awards The Tony Castañeda Latin Jazz Band has opened for legendary Latin jazz artists such as Poncho Sanchez, John Santos, Giovanni Hidalgo and John Benitez.

Founded in 2014, the Bill Roberts Combo brings a tight, nuanced, and rhythmically powerful  presentation to blues-jazz unlike anything you've heard before. The Combo performs both as an instrumental unit, and in a full band with a vocalist and other instrumentation, allowing the Combo to shine in many different kinds of events and venues. Bill Roberts has been voted best electric guitarist in the Madison area, and his award-winning album Blues Rides Shotgun has received critical claim as best blues album of the year. Backing Bill is a band of veteran players who have performed nationally and internationally in such places as France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, Switzerland, Mexico, and elsewhere. Closer to home, the Bill Roberts Combo  plays many top venues in Madison and the upper Midwest. BRC delivers grace, subtlety, power and passion in their unique and mesmerizing take on the jazz-blues tradition every time they take the stage.
